Introduction
📍 And hello everybody. Thank you so much for once again listening in here on the Course effect. I'm Scott, and this is our TLDL summary From my wonderful conversation with David Madiera. He's a fellow Penn graduate, former D one lacrosse player, entrepreneur, definitely into the social causes. And really our discussion.
Centered around how to have authentic leadership, and that meaning that you have to support others' dreams while staying true to your own values. So I'm gonna briefly summarize it in this TLDL. The two long didn't listen, but if you do like this summary, I certainly encourage you to go back and listen to the full episode that I had with David.
'cause it was a phenomenal chat and we talked about a number of different things.
Authentic Leadership and True Influence
First of all. That true influence comes through connection. So we talked about David's journey coming from being a collegiate athlete to a business leader, and how along that journey it taught him that true influence doesn't come from any titles, but really comes from genuine connections.
He had his story that he was the backup goalie to the. University of Pennsylvania team that made it to the final Four and then was suddenly thrust into. The throes of play and really had to learn that he contributed by knowing his role, by having the good connections with everybody on the team, such that when his number was called, hey, he was ready.
And similarly, in some of the corporate turnarounds, he discovered that listening and building the trust with the people that he was working with. It was far more effective than saying, I have the authority. And that's certainly 📍 something resonates with me in terms of if you want to go fast, go alone.
But if you wanna go far, go together. And the quickest way to go together with people that I found in my journey. Is to build authentic connection so that you have those army of zealots behind you that are able to amplify and multiply the leadership impact that you want. We talk about the fact that we're here to multiply our leadership impact without sacrificing.
That which is important to us family, as an example. A way to do that is to extend that close tribe around you with professional colleagues that are gonna help you in your desired goals. We also talked about.
Balancing Family and Career
The focus on family over career advancement. And what really struck out at me was David had a epi choice in terms of having to say, am I gonna go career or am I gonna go family?
And when he was looking at some of the needs that his daughter had after his divorce, he chose to go entrepreneurship. Over the more lucrative corporate path because it allowed him the freedom of time and presence in order to be an aid to her life. And the explanation was simple. She didn't ask to be brought into this life.
My responsibility has to be to her. And if we're being honest, how often do we at times over prioritize our profession and our work to the point that we sacrifice time and presence with our families, particularly our kids. Now, you're 📍 always gonna have this role switching as part of an integrated life.
Being able to achieve for yourself within the confines of your career is important. That's why it's one of the four pillars of the Chorus platform, but it cannot come overly at the expense of connection, particularly with your tribe and your family. So being able to properly prioritize that is a critical element.
On the journey towards our legacy.
Supporting Others' Passions
And then finally, we talk about supporting others' passions. And he shared his philosophy on supporting his daughter's passion for theater despite his own background in sports and being able to create an annual event where they would go to Broadway and that he would demonstrate that he was willing to meet her.
In the environment that she loved and allowing her to find her own North Star and sharing his wisdom that the important thing isn't that the stars get the love, they get it from everyone else. It's the people struggling on the bench who needs the hugs, and certainly as I am going through different journeys with my kids, my son baseball, my daughters into performing arts.
They have their ups, they have their downs, they have everything in between. But at the end of the day. I'm just dead. And that they're looking to me for love, support, no matter what is going on. And I think that's a critical message for all of us who are leading children, leading teams, et cetera, right? The proper use of empathy in order to say, Hey.
I got you. If you ticker thin, I've got you right. That is such an important thing for us as we take a look at what it truly means to uplift others, what it truly means to inspire others as part of that drive towards. Achieving our legacy.
