And hello everybody. Welcome back to The Corvus Effect. I'm Scott, and this is my TLDL. Too long didn't listen from my conversation with Jonathan Mayo, founder of the Waymaker Movement and leadership coach for high performing founders. His military background as a US Army captain helped shaped his unique approach to helping leaders transition from success.
To significance through what he calls steward leadership. Rather than servant leadership. And let's deep into a couple of big takeaways in terms of why Steward leadership is so important for anyone trying to break free of the founder dependency syndrome and bring. Clarity to their efforts to build sustainable impact.
From Cool Guy to Conduit
First, John talked about a foundational shift he had from trying to be the cool guy to becoming a conduit for his team success. He explained the more I released trying to be the cool guy, and the more I embraced being a conduit to help my teams accomplish the mission and win. The better things went and this lesson was crystallized during the military training exercise when of his soldiers gave him feedback about his visible frustration.
Even directed just at equipment deflated the entire team. He learned that leadership means letting them borrow my calm no matter what is happening, and that created the clarity and effectiveness that was paramount for his team to succeed in their missions. Certainly one of our core principles is that true leadership starts with self-leadership.
And self-awareness. You cannot lead others effectively if you haven't mastered leading yourself.
Servant vs Steward Leadership
Secondly, John's distinction between servant leadership and steward leadership fundamentally reframes leadership responsibility. As he explained. When you're being a servant to something, you're just subjugating yourself to it.
When you're stewarding something, you're responsible for. Outcome of every element of it. This linguistic shift creates what's John called, a lot of freedom, because stewardship requires value based judgment rather than reactive service to every demand. Here at vus, we talk about the importance of.
Ownership and leadership as we pursue our legacies and being intentional with the choices, decisions, and actions that we make, such that we are always utilizing our most precious Resources, our time and our energy in the most effective manner. John's view on steward leadership certainly plays into this.
The Four-Dimensional Game
Finally, John identified what many successful founders faced playing a three-dimensional game when success actually requires. Four dimensions, and he shared an example of a leader who was so focused on business that he was missing the relationship piece at home, and he realized that he needed to add another dimension into his life in order to put intentional actions in place to holistically fulfill his life and improve his health.
Improve his connection and ultimately improve his business perfectly illustrates our philosophy here at Corvus that. Integration across all of life's dimensions. Career, health, wealth and connection does not detract from professional success. It actually amplifies it. And as John put it, he emphasized the second I put myself on the pedestal of guru, teacher, coach, I lose the ability to learn. So he would say, make sure you always have a learning mindset.
Conclusion
And I hope that this helped you have a learning mindset today. It certainly did with me. I encourage you to listen to the full episode where John shares more in terms of what he calls his Kill it sessions for eliminating that which doesn't serve your vision.
