Episode Overview: Mike Perlow's Journey
Hey everybody, it's Scott. Welcome to this TL DL episode of The Corus Effect. From my conversation with Mike Perlow, the unintentional entrepreneur who transformed from TV sportscaster covering the Red Sox Historic 2004 World Series two. Prolo Productions, a thriving video storytelling company and TLDL for the don't know too long, didn't listen.
If you didn't have time to listen to the full episode, no worries. I've got you back into the summit. But I do encourage you to go back and listen to that episode from beginning to end because it had phenomenal, profound insights all over the place, but most of them centering around how genuine human connection and collaborative storytelling are really the keys for businesses.
When they answer the question, why should somebody work with you? So let's talk about those key takeaways.
Authentic Differentiation in Business
So first off, Mike had the observation that businesses try to answer the wrong question. In their marketing efforts, and he explained the big question that he thinks is the misstep, is they're answering why.
Folks need what they do. And it's the wrong question to answer because essentially you're doing sales and marketing for your competition. You are marketing for the service that the industry as a whole is providing. Instead, the critical question as sea phrase is. Why? When they know they need what you do, they should work with you or your company.
That concept of how can you be one of one so that you are the only choice that your. Customers need, and in the corvus world, we talk about this concept of authentic differentiation. Not just understanding what you do, but why you're uniquely positioned to do it better than anyone else to drive those six dimensions of freedom.
This is critical in terms of having that attraction and vibration into the marketplace so that people come to you because they don't see any other choice. But you
Leadership Evolution and Team Collaboration
second Mike talked about his evolution as a business owner, particularly from being a somewhat controlling micromanager to a collaborative leader and being able to have sustained business development as result.
You know, I asked him if he could go back and talk to himself back in 2 0 0 7 when he started. What would he tell himself? And one of the examples he gave was that he was being so much a control freak that he would be standing over videographer's shoulders, making sure that he understood what they were shooting, et cetera, and that he now operates from the philosophy that people work with me.
Not for me. And creating an environment where his team actively contributes to ideas, takes ownership, and in some cases actually goes above and beyond. Mike gave phenomenal story in terms of there's a shoot they were doing under poor weather conditions. He wanted to shut it down because he wanted his team out of the cold, but the team pushed him and said, no, we want more material.
And they did that of their own accord because they had. Ownership of the result. So true leadership isn't about control. It's about creating the conditions where everyone can perform at their highest level.
Balancing Boundaries of Family and Business
And then finally, we talked about Mike's unwavering commitment to family boundaries and how successful entrepreneurs can maintain their boundaries.
And not have it sacrifice their business growth. And he said the number of times running a demanding production company where he's had to make those choices has been rare. But it's also because he's been very proactive in the way that he's communicated. So recently, as his son is playing baseball and he's got 3:30 PM baseball games, Mike would leave the office and he would say.
Look, you know, even if my son is gonna ride the pine that game, it's important for me to be there and be a part of that because I want my presence to be there. And this really exemplifies what we teach here at Corvus Work. Work-life integration is not about perfect balance because there is no such thing as perfect balance.
And the moment that you have perfect balance, wait five minutes is gonna change. It's about clear priorities. And the discipline to honor them and really being prepared. Mike had his five P's philosophy that he learned back in college. Proper preparation prevents poor performance, so whether it's on the client production side, business strategy, family commitments, et cetera, right?
Preparation really drives success, and Mike is a. Fitting example of that.
The Power of Authentic Networking
And he is also fitting example in terms of the power of authentic networking and how from the early onsets of moving to South Jersey and having to build up his network from scratch to what he does today as chapter head of the connective.
Genuine relationship building, not transactional. Networking drives long term success.
