Introduction

And hello everybody. Welcome back to this episode of The Corvus Effect. I am Scott. This is the TLDL summary from my wonderful conversation with Colonel j Scot Heathman, TLDL stands for too long. Didn't listen. And if you weren't able to listen to our wonderful chat, no worries. I got your back in this five-ish minute summary.

Certainly, if you like this summary, I encourage you to go back and listen to the full episode because I. Scott Heathman is a gem. He is an absolute gem, and I loved how we focused on the conversation from him being the retired air force commander and leadership expert, and how that really centered his journey from military leadership.

To brain tumor survivor to foundation of elevating others and how he's taken all of these elements of his life and his journey and transformed it into the journey. That defines his legacy, which ultimately, as we talk about what are we here for as members of Corvus and the Corvus platform, that's what it's about.

Servant Leadership in the Military

So we started off talking about servant leadership, particularly with all the years that he spent in the military and his deep philosophy that is rooted in servant leadership. And it might surprise people who expect military leadership to be all about rigid command and control. And what he found was you needed to blend structure with compassion, and you needed to focus on what he called self command.

Very similar to what we talk about here in terms of the foundations of self-leadership. So he explained you could take. Classes and get upskilled. But in those times when you are struggling, you're probably just with yourself and how you are able to have the self-awareness, self-belief, and self-accountability at those moments that really matter, to lead yourself to where you are supposed to be.

That is a powerful message with, I think Scott beautifully illustrated in our chat regarding his experiences.

Resilience and Overcoming Adversity

He also talked about resilience because he had a life-changing crisis with his journey, having to battle the brain tumor and. Being able to do it after completely shocked. It was an unexpected diagnosis, uh, following a car accident and that had to undergo a 10 hour surgery that he was temporarily unable to walk or see clearly, and really had to battle back over a number of months in order to get to operational by military standards such that he could.

uh, rejoin the force and be able to do what he was doing, and that it was very difficult for him because he thought, what if I never get to do what I had been doing simply because this had happened? And he talked about simplifying his focus. I can't control what's happening right now anyway, so let me control what I can control.

All of us have an external world, which is around us and indirectly impacting us on a daily basis. Sometimes good, sometimes not so good, at least in the present moment. Although we firmly believe here, the universe is always working in your favor, even if you don't understand it at first. But self-leadership.

Ultimately has a degree of control and ownership to it, such that you are empowering yourself to decide what you do next within the environment that is presented to you. I love that message from Scott Heathman. I love that as part of the echoing of what we teach here, such that we can multiply our leadership impact spot on all the way around.

Vulnerability as a Leadership Strength

And then finally we talked about something which is kind of odd for a military person to speak about, which is vulnerability as a leadership strength, and how emotional intelligence really became a powerful leadership tool in his journey. He shared a moment when his team immediately noticed something was wrong, and he learned in that lesson that leaders need to.

Talk more out loud because they need to be able to express those times where they're unsure or I don't know, and that they need the guidance of the people that are around them to help them get to the right decision, the right location, the right uh, conclusion of the mission. And that was something that Scott learned.

As part of the whole balance in terms of yes, there's structure, but there is also a level of empathy such that your team feels like they can relate to you. They can connect to you that they are valued by you and that you're all in it together. And that was something that certainly surprised him, that expressing that vulnerability is not a weakness.

It's the cornerstone of a high trust culture where people feel safe, too. Innovate and excel.

Building Trust Through Vulnerability

Simon Sinek. Did a presentation a number of years back where he was talking with Navy Seals and he was asking them who do they prefer to have on their team, the person who is skilled or the person that they can trust.

And while obviously you want both. If you had to choose one or the other, the Navy Seals to a man said the person you can trust. So that building of trust through vulnerability, certainly something that we can carry through in the ways that we go about our pursuit of our legacy.

Conclusion

So wonderful chat with Scott.

Phenomenal man. Certainly encourage you to listen to the full episode and to reach out to him. You can find all of that on the corvus effect.com. We're also on Apple Podcast and Spotify. Subscribe, share with those who can gain from it. We certainly love the reviews that you guys give us in terms of feedback and make sure you keep a lookout for his upcoming book, command with Courage, elevating Beyond Adversity, which really talks about his AIM framework.

If nothing else, take away this, that he emphasized sometimes the greatest leadership strength. It comes from having the courage to be present and vulnerable in the face of life's challenges and see how you can apply that today. Till next time, take care y'all. Thanks.
