Guest Introduction
And hello everybody. Welcome back to this episode of The Corvus Effect. I am Scott, and this is my TLDL with my conversation with Scott Jingle. Family business advisor and founder of Jingled Advisors, TLDL, stands for too long, didn't listen. So if you didn't have an opportunity to hear our wonderful conversation and the decades of experience and wisdom that he brought, hey, I've got you back.
This is my five to seven minute summary and really focusing on how family businesses can navigate. The complex intersection of business success and family harmony. So let's dive into some of the key takeaways. First.
Family First, Business Second
Scott's approach to family business consulting really centers on a profound understanding that family must come first, business second, he explained it better than I could.
I want them to take away knowing that I always did what I thought was in the best interest of the family, family first, business second, you try to marry those two things up as best as you humanly can. And for us here at Corvus, where we are profound in terms of saying work is one role you play in your integrated life, and it all has to work together for not only you.
But also your tribe, your family, your close friends, et cetera. We do not believe that you should have to sacrifice your family to prioritize business success or vice versa. Rather, is the combination which creates the foundation that drives us towards our legacy.
The Myth of Having It All
Secondly, Scott got into the myth that having it all means sacrificing nothing.
And he said that he grew up in an era where they said you can have it all, and that's just not right. And every decision that we make. Particularly the really big decisions they have an opportunity cost associated with them. And how that relates to us here at Corvus is that integration is not about perfect balance.
We've said time and time again, balance is a myth. It doesn't exist in the moment it exists. Wait a second, it's gone. It's more about the intentional choices that we make to integrate the roles in our life in order to have a sense of harmony across all of the elements of our life. And Scott talked about this in terms of, I.
Being able to prioritize his family so that he was able to coach all of his youth sports for his sons, and he may have missed three events in his entire life. And that's where we really get into this concept of prioritizing what it means to be present in the roles we play in our integrated life.
Communication Challenges in Family Businesses
Finally, Scott illuminated on the communication challenges that plague. Family businesses and really that a lot of things are just assumed because y'all share the same blood. No, sorry, not the case, right? Just 'cause you share the same blood does not mean that you guys are the same people. In fact, people can be vastly different and sometimes not be able to communicate effectively with each other.
That's particularly true when it comes to generational differences, and as we talked about with some of these. Baby boomer businesses that are being ready to be passed down to the next generation, that there has to be at least open conversation between the parties. You don't have to necessarily agree with each other on everything, right?
But there has to be common ground that. Parties within the family and within the business come to to say, we may see things differently, but here's how we are going to say we agree to this respectful dialogue, this respectful path forward in order to really help grow the legacy that has been created.
And that's really. The foundation of leveraging emotional intelligence in the right way, something which is a core principle that we teach here at Corvus, and Scott said it better than I did in terms of what's one of the biggest things that gets in the way of this, which is not being able to have the frank conversations in a timely manner.
He says, having frank conversations about the things that matter. Let's get to the heart of it. Let's not beat around the bush. The sooner we do that, the sooner we can move business forward and the sooner we're united as a family too, which ultimately for a lot of these family oriented businesses, that's what they want.
They want everything, to come together with a sense of successful harmony. Across all fronts, which is exactly what we want with our Corvus lifestyle.
Conclusion
