Overview and Guest Introduction
Hey everybody, it's Scott. Welcome to this TL DL episode of The Corpus Effect. From my conversation with Scott MacGregor, head of the Outlier Project, going to prove that extraordinary lives are achievable by. Everybody and he has discovered his path. That significance isn't about following the crowd, it's deliberately choosing the road less traveled and building authentic relationships with intentionality.
And I think that that's a wonderful lesson for us to dig in here in this summary. If you didn't have the time, it was a too long, didn't listen. Situation for you. I highly encourage you to go back and listen to my full interview with Scott MacGregor. He's a phenomenal person, but let's go ahead and dive into some of the key takeaways.
You Have The Power to BE & CHOOSE Extraordinary
First off, his fundamental foundational philosophy, it reframes what we think about as extraordinary achievement. He said. Anyone can be ordinary, but we all have the power to choose to be extraordinary and choose is the key word. It's not about being born with advantages, it's intentional decision making.
He self-describe, said. He thought that in order to live an extraordinary life, you needed to be born into money. You needed to be someone with Michael Jordan's, DNA. And then as he met very successful people, particularly in the business and sports and entertainment world, he realized that there were a ton of people that weren't necessarily born with those things, but it was their intentional choices that led them.
To an extraordinary life, and that distinction is everything. It shifts the focus to the internal decisions that we make on a day in day out basis. And we talk about the principle of self-leadership within the core of this dynamic. Self-awareness, self-belief, self-accountability, recognizing that we have the agency to create the life we want is a powerful, powerful lesson.
The Evolution of the Outlier Project
Second, Scott talked about the evolution of the outlier project as a whole, and he offered a masterclass in authentic business pivoting. He shared a moment of truth where he's got Brandy Chastain, who's a two type World Cup champ, and he wanted to bring her on to the group that he had created with the talent.
Champions council, but he felt like he was trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. So what did he do? He rebranded completely. He took a successful concept and developed it into an even more successful concept with an authentic vision. And if he hadn't taken that step, he probably wouldn't have gotten to where he and the group are today.
So when we talk about. Integrated leadership in our lives. True success for us requires the courage to pivot when the current path you are on does not align with your authentic purpose. Otherwise, all you're doing is really optimizing an accidental prison that you are in rather than designing a new path to the freedom that you are seeking.
Networking vs. Relationship Building
Finally, the distinction between networking and relationship building was something that Scott emphasizes and is a sustainable influence in how he's gone about things. He doesn't believe in networking. He thinks it's very transactional. I totally believe with him, I. Like him believe in powerful relationships and friendships and his approach in terms of being genuinely curious about others.
Being able to say, how do I add value to this person so that we may add value to each other as we go down the road? And he's always looking to see. Can he form a relationship with people at a basic human needs level? Something that we can relate to every single day. But the trick of it is, is that you have to be intentional about it, because a lot of people, we talked about the Chris tough phrase of an asshole.
Right, and that they will warm you up only to say, Hey, can I ask you for something that's not gonna fly with Scott MacGregor? It has to be done. strategically and authentically so that. You feel like you are building up a true friendship, not just something that is an exchange of goods at the end of the day.
And so when we paired this with the VU philosophy in terms of sustainable success. Sustainable success means having wonderful partners at your side who are going to help continue to drive you towards the vision that you are looking for. You don't want these to be one and dones. You don't want these to be people who, ghost you, right?
So how do you do that? You do it in a manner where the two of you are truly collaborating, not saying, well, what can I get from this person? What can they give me? What's in it for me? Asking what's in it for them and being able to put them first in the way we think about things is how we drive success, not only for them, but for ourselves at the end of the day.
The Importance of Legacy
Scott had a profound perspective on legacy that I think is a great way to close this. He said, most of the things that we chase for the majority of our lives are things that nobody's gonna care about. The businesses, the books, the awards, the house, et cetera. Nobody's gonna care about that. The impact that's made on people.
That is your legacy, and that is what has ripple effects. How are you putting impact over other things such as output in the work that you guys are doing today? Give that a think because that's a profound question in order to drive towards the legacy that we are seeking.
