Introduction
And hello everybody. Welcome back to the Corvus Effect. I'm Scott and thank you so much for listening to this TL DL episode from my chat with Stefan Sek, author of the Way of the Co-Creative Leader, the TL DL is short for too long. Didn't listen. If you didn't have chance to listen to the full episode, no worries.
I got your back in this five-ish minute summary and hopefully this gives you the encouragement to go back and listen to our chat 'cause.
Key Insights from Steffan Surdek
Stefan was a wonderful person to talk to full of wisdom and perspective, and I loved his core message that was focused on evolving from the traditional command and control leadership to a more collaborative approach that creates sustainable.
Organizational change. So we talked a lot about the journey to co-creative leadership, and he shared his path from starting off as a software developer to truly becoming a leadership innovator, highlighting how. Technical 📍 experts often struggle when transitioning to leadership roles, and I'm sure that we've all felt this or seen where people get promoted or elevated to a new position, mainly based on the success that they had.
Previously, but that new position has a set of skills that they have not really developed yet, and we can talk about that in the workplace. We can talk about that in the gym In terms of doing a set of exercise that you've never done before.
The Moses Effect and Building Internal Capacity
Ultimately Stefan introduced this concept of the Moses effect, where.
Consultants will come in, they'll create temporary improvements that vanish when they leave, but they're not sustainable because you don't have the culture that's willing to continuously do the reps and improve people as you go. So being able to build that internal capacity.
Five Key Skills of Co-Creative Leadership
In the workplace or in our personal lives, is a critically important skill, and that's where Stefan really talked about the five key skills of co-creative leadership.
And he had a particular 📍 emphasis on being a voice among many and unleashing the leaders around you, challenging the notion that leaders must have all the answers. Or always speak last. As somebody who is very much a servant leader. I have this podcast and other things because I want to serve others through the wisdom that I've gained over the years.
This resonates deeply with me. It is about bringing the mission to the best point possible, and it does not necessarily have to be. Me who is the one who is the most vocal person? When I think about one of my big, hairy, audacious goals to be able to get to the point that I say I've transformed 10,000 men's lives, that's not gonna be I.
Me being the person who says that it's gonna be the people who I've touched saying it and expressing it in their own manner. And that's the type of collaboration that I want with everything that I do. And that's something that Stefan talked about in terms of developing that collaborative approach so that everybody contributes.
Even if they feel a little bit hesitant to do so, that the environment is such that they feel that they can contribute freely.
The Concept of Conversational Debt
And finally, we talked about this concept called conversational debt. It's the unspoken issues we avoid addressing that accumulate over time. How many times have. You've heard this expression that you've gotta let it out, otherwise the volcano is gonna explode.
Particularly for men who generally speaking, have been told, suck it up, man up, et cetera, do not allow your point of view to be seen as a volatile reaction. Well, the problem is, is that if you don't let that out. The larger volatile reaction is coming, and so being able to really understand that you have to be able to pay that debt in terms of having the appropriate conversations to be able to address issues with compassion.
And create that psychological safety to help build stronger relationships. Connection is a core of what we teach within the core of this platform, and as a part of that connection has to be able to ride through both the good times and the not so good times. We do that by being able to address things head on.
In an appropriate manner, and that's something that Stefan truly talked about when we talked about this concept of conversational debt.
Conclusion
